Why real hourly rate matters

Advertised rate ignores real driving costs

The block rate Amazon shows doesn't include fuel, tyres, maintenance or depreciation. These reduce what you actually earn per hour.

Compare blocks fairly

Two blocks with the same advertised rate can have very different real pay once mileage and time are factored in.

Avoid low-paying blocks

Knowing your real hourly rate helps you skip blocks that look okay on the surface but pay poorly after costs.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my real hourly rate lower than the block rate?
The block rate is the pay Amazon shows for the block. Your real hourly rate is what you actually make per hour after subtracting vehicle costs (fuel, wear, insurance, etc.) and any extra time you spend. Mileage and costs reduce your take-home, so real hourly rate is often lower than the advertised rate.
What counts as vehicle cost?
Vehicle cost typically includes fuel, maintenance, tyres, depreciation, insurance and other running costs. Tax authorities often publish a standard rate per mile (e.g. for deductions); that can be a useful baseline, but your actual cost may vary.
What's a good cost per mile to use?
Many drivers use their tax authority's mileage rate as a default (e.g. IRS or HMRC rates). You can override with your own estimate if you track your actual costs. The calculator default is a typical estimate; adjust it for accuracy.
How is real hourly rate calculated?
Real hourly rate = (block pay − vehicle cost) ÷ block duration. Vehicle cost = miles driven × cost per mile. So the more miles you do and the higher your cost per mile, the lower your real hourly rate.
Does FlexTrackr track this for me?
Yes. FlexTrackr tracks your blocks over time and calculates your real hourly rate after costs so you don't have to work it out block by block. You can see which blocks and depots pay best and export records for tax.

Understanding your Amazon Flex hourly rate

Amazon Flex blocks are advertised with a fixed payment, but that doesn't always represent the true hourly rate once mileage, fuel and vehicle costs are considered. Using a calculator like this helps drivers estimate their real hourly pay after expenses and compare blocks more accurately.

For example, a £60 Amazon Flex block lasting 2.5 hours may appear to pay £24 per hour, but once mileage and running costs are included the real hourly rate can be significantly lower.

Track blocks over time with FlexTrackr

Instead of calculating each block manually, FlexTrackr helps drivers track every block and see their real hourly rate over time. Know which blocks and depots pay best — and export tax-ready records.
